ChattaScooter, An Eco-Friendly, Fun Way to Get Around, Expands to Include Southside , Chattanooga Trend, Jan 21 2021 by Natalia Perez

Adventure Sports Innovation (ASI) has launched ChattaScooter, a new personal mobility program offering a safe and convenient way for most adults to rent an e-scooter. Perfect for visitors looking to explore the city, or for residents looking for a fun outing in the Scenic City, the ChattaScooter program provides a fun and eco-friendly way to get around.

Private on-demand scooter rentals are now available in Chattanooga, with three locations for pickup and drop-off, including ASI, One Riverside Apartments and The Local Juicery and Kitchen.

“The plan is that our next locations would be more apartment complexes, hotels and a few businesses or shopping plazas,” says Carolina Molloy, co-owner of ASI. “We will be looking to establish pickup/drop-off locations where people live, shop and play, in downtown, West Village, UTC campus, Riverfront Northshore and perhaps out by Saint Elmo.”

Pricing for the stand-up, electric scooters is $24 per hour, or $0.40 per minute, charged by the minute via the phone app from Levy, Inc. Riders need to be at least 16 years old and must own a smartphone and debit/credit card.

For rider safety during COVID, scooters and helmets are sanitized after each rental.

“We started ChattaScooter at our storefront on the Northshore to see if there was demand, and to test our model and software with very little advertising. Last fall, we added two locations to test how that would work, and we’re working to expand our fleet and partner locations by March when the weather warms up.”

Not Your Typical Scooter Program

Last year in February, the City Council indefinitely banned controversial dockless electric scooter companies from coming to Chattanooga after some expressed concerns with dumped and junked vehicles, speeding drivers and increased accidents.

The ChattaScooter program meets existing guidelines, and it differs from other stand-up scooters in that scooters can only be rented and dropped off at the aforementioned three locations. To ensure that scooters aren’t abandoned, the renter’s credit card continues to be charged until the vehicle is returned correctly, taking charges up to $1,000.

“ChattaScooter aims to fill a transportation need in the Chattanooga metro area,” says Patrick Molloy, Adventure Sports Innovation’s CEO. “We offer easy access to cool transportation devices, and the program addresses the safety concerns and haphazard parking that often occur with ‘dockless’ scooters programs”.

Luis Contreras, Team Leader at the Local Juicery and Kitchen, who recently signed up to become part of the program, says: “We definitely see the growing demand for more choices in transportation around the city, and are excited to offer this convenience for both residents and visitors to our city”.

A Chattanooga business is expanding downtown area electric scooter rentals and providing pickup and drop-off coverage in the North Shore, Southside, and next to the Riverwalk.

ChattaScooter has plans to include more sites to rent and drop off the e-scooters early next year, such as around the Tennessee Aquarium and UTC, said Carolina Molloy, co-owner of Adventure Sports Innovation.

“We understand the ban on dockless scooters,” she said about the city’s regulations. “This meets existing guidelines.”

In February, the City Council indefinitely banned controversial dockless electric scooter companies from coming to Chattanooga after some had expressed interest.

Many municipalities had reported problems with dumped and junked vehicles, riders speeding along on sidewalks instead of streets and increased numbers of accidents.

Molloy said that ChattaScooter is different because the stand-up scooters can only be rented and dropped off at the company’s locations. At present, the sites are at Adventure Sports, 191 River St.; One Riverside Apartments, 950 Riverside Parkway; and The Local Juicery and Kitchen, 48 E. Main St., she said.

To ensure the scooters aren’t abandoned on city streets or sidewalks, the renter’s credit card continues to be charged unless the vehicle is turned in correctly, Molloy said.

“It will continue taking charges up to $1,000,” she said. “That’s a pretty big incentive to not leave it in the middle of a curb.”

The Local Juicery is the latest entity to join the ChattaScooters network, doing so just last week.

Luis Contreras, team leader at The Local Juicery, said he’s excited to offer the convenience of the scooters for residents and visitors to the city.

“We definitely see the growing demand for more choice in transportation around the city,” he said.

Pricing is $24 per hour, or 40 cents per minute, charged by the minute via a phone app from Levy Inc., Molloy said. Daily and longer-term rentals are available through Chattanooga-based Adventure Sports Innovation.

While ChattaScooter launched this summer with a limited initial fleet of vehicles, the company has plans for more scooters and locations as demand ramps up in the spring, Molloy said. Currently, there are 15 scooters in its fleet, she said.

“What we’re trying to do is set up the structure for the spring and summer,” Molloy said. “We want to make sure we iron out all the kinks. The winter is the slow months. It’s a good time to test this structure.”

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Molloy believes the scooters are safe.

“You’re not sharing public transportation,” she said. “You have your own transportation. You can be socially distant from everybody else.”

ChattaScooter allows people age 16 and older with a smartphone and a credit or debit card to rent the e-scooters, the business owner said.

The speed of the scooters is limited to 15 miles per hour, she said. While the scooters can go faster, the business wants people to be careful, especially first-time renters, Molloy said, adding it also offers helmets.

But when the scooter is in sport mode, there’s more acceleration, she said.

The idea behind the scooters is mainly for riders to have fun, though the addition of the Main Street business to the network permits transport between the North Shore and Southside, Molloy said.

Adventure Sports Innovation was launched at its Coolidge Park storefront in July 2018 by Molloy and co-owner husband Patrick. The business calls itself an experience shop, featuring some of the latest in recreation technology.

Molloy said 2020 has been tough on the business as it has on many, but she’s keeping a positive outlook.

“Once we have a vaccine, everyone cooped up will want to do outdoor adventures,” she said. “That’s what we’re mainly about.”

CityScope Magazine, 2020 Annual Business Issue: Success In the Second Half: Patrick and Carolina Molloy

It can take years of hard work, dedication and perseverance to like you’ve “made it” in your chosen career -which is why , for many, the idea of starting again from scratch is absolutely terrifying. Yet, those who boldly make the switch after decades spent in a familiar industry are often rewarded, whether with financial gain, or, more importantly, greater fulfillment and personal satisfaction. Though the transition may be challenging at times, a career change later in life can be the golden opportunity to pursue a long-held passion and find meaningful work for the years ahead.

The following six professionals have successfully navigated a midlife career change. What follows are their stories of taking the leap. […]

Patrick and Carolina Molloy said goodbye to their NY City home in the summer of 2017, shortly after leaving decades-long career in the corporate banking and financial services industries respectively. You could say that the move was the beginning of a grand adventure.

“I spent 31 years in cash management, and I enjoyed it” Patrick recalls. “I liked the travel and I liked interacting with a lot of people.” Carolina, who was a management consultant, also appreciated the daily face to face interactions.

However, at that point in our lives, we both wanted a change from Corporate America”, Carolina explains. “we wanted to be entrepreneurs. With Patrick’s passion for adventure sports, we knew out business was going to be in that industry. We just had to choose where to relocation” With its moderate climate, abundant resources for new entrepreneurs, ad an already developed adventure sports industry, Chattanooga was the perfect spot.

By July 2018, Adventure Sports Inovation was up and running. “We spent a whole year researching, forming out business plan, attending conferences, scouting our gear” Patrick says. Learning how to use some of the gear proved to be a challenge for Patrick initially. “I spent 3 whole weeks in my garage trying to master the electric unicycle!” Patrick laughs. “Since then, we’ve developed proprietary training methods, so now we get most adults road ready in two 30-minute lessons!”

According to the Molloys, there was plenty of help along the way. Patrick explains “Being in Chattanooga has been invaluable. We probably sat in 30 different sessions in our first Startup Week alone. And then, we were able to hire some really good people. Our staff has worked hard to make the customer experience so exceptional”.

One of Carolina’s favorite parts of the job is seeing the direct result of their hard work. “I enjoy that we created Adventure Sports Innovation just the 2 of us – it was our brainchild. We’ll get customers that ask: ‘where else can I find ASI? Is this a franchise?’ To which we reply , “no, this is it!’ We have a running list of places where we could expand one day.” Patrick ads, “When we conduct training and we watch people learn and adapt to our gear- and they come away smiling, that’s the most rewarding thing”.

Founder Spotlight: Patrick and Carolina Molloy with Adventure Sports Innovation by Co.Lab, Jul 31 2020

Founder Spotlight

Patrick and Carolina Molloy are the founders of Adventure Sports Innovation, a business that brings to market the latest inventions and innovations for outdoor experiences, sourced from inventors and manufacturers around the world.

The business is located on River Street in Chattanooga’s North Shore neighborhood, facing Coolidge Park and the gorgeous Tennessee River that runs through downtown Chattanooga. If you head to the river on a weekend, you are likely to see people having the time of their lives riding things you likely haven’t seen before, such as the Kymera E-Jet Bodyboard or the Lift eFoil Surfboard

Before they got into the business of outdoor experiences, Patrick and Carolina were both working in the finance sector in New York City. Patrick’s last position before leaving to start his business was as Director of Product Development for Bank of America. Carolina was a managing consultant for companies in the financial services industry.

In 2017, they decided they wanted a change of scenery and wanted to start an outdoor-centric business. They looked at several cities to move to, and after seeing the rapidly growing outdoor scene in Chattanooga and the tourism that came with it, they decided to make the move here. They arrived in the summer of 2017, where they experienced the city and all it had to offer like tourists themselves. A year later, they went through the CO.STARTERS program at CO.LAB and launched Adventure Sports Innovation.

2019 was a great year for their business. If there was an outdoor event in the area, such as the Ironman, they were there with a booth and it was a great way to attract customers to their business which was readily accessible for those spending their days downtown near the water. The company was also hosting excursions on land too, such as weekly tours at Reflection Riding where people would ride vehicles the company has exclusive rights to sell in the U.S., the Swincar E-Spider Off-Road Vehicle

Like most businesses across the country, Patrick and Carolina’s plans and hopes for growth in 2020 were disrupted by COVID-19. Trends in outdoor recreation have seen changes in recent months during the crisis. While more people are seeking out hiking and other activities, close to 50% of those doing activities are doing so only miles from their home, according to a study from LNT.org.

For Adventure Sports Innovation, this has become a challenge as more than 70% of last year’s business was from tourists. This year, tourists account for only 25% of their business. Group activities, such as corporate activities, are also significantly down. However, they say they have seen an increase in local participation, with more residents from the area coming to Coolidge Park and trying out for the first time what Adventure Sports Innovation has to offer.

In the meantime, Patrick and Carolina remain resilient in continuing to promote and bring in business. For Patrick, he says he is optimistic that Chattanooga will bounce back, and like many business owners in the region are asking, it is just a matter of when.
