Exploring Trails as a Wheelchair User: My Experience Driving a Spider Car

Note: Social distancing was practiced the whole time, and masks were worn when in close-contact with people outside our household (which was only 15-20 minutes of our entire excursion). We didn’t wear masks out on the trail, but we weren’t in close contact with anyone out there. Also, all these thoughts are my own, I’m not partnered with Adventure Sports Innovation, just a happy customer!

A few weeks ago, my parents and I went to Chattanooga, TN and went off-roading and on trails using a spider car!

What is a spider car, you may be wondering? That’s the same question I had when we got there. (My parents didn’t tell me where we were going or what we were doing, I was just told to get in the car!)

A spider car, technically called a Swincar E-Spider Off-Road Vehicle, is a 4 wheel electric off-road vehicle! What makes the spider car unique is that the wheels move independently from each other and move up and down to keep themselves on the ground even when going up or down inclines or over obstacles. Here’s a picture and a link to a video to explain better than I can! (neither of these are my own content).

Adaptive needs Swincar driver

Most importantly (for me): they are all hand-controlled!! If you have full use of your hands, I think you’d be able to drive one! My fingers did tire occasionally, but I just switched to using my pointer finger to control the trigger for a little while and it was no problem. If you don’t have full use of your hands, they do have at least one 2-person car at Adventure Sports Innovation, so you should be able to be a passenger and still enjoy the trails!

We started off going on flat paths to learn how to control the cars and go over small obstacles and inclines, then went to more advanced terrain. To be honest, historically I am not a fan of going off-road. It makes me incredibly nervous. When we got there and I discovered the surprise was going off-road and then realized I would be driving (rather than being a passenger where I could close my eyes and wait to be done with the anxiety-inducing steep hill), I looked at my mom like she was crazy. BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY VERY FUN AND NOT NERVE-WRACKING! Our guide Chris was spectacular and assured me we weren’t going to do anything crazy. Once I started driving, I felt very comfortable and had an excellent time! I think being in control actually calmed my nerves too.

I honestly enjoyed the whole experience, but my favorite part was going very quickly through the fields at top speeds (around 18 mph). As a wheelchair user, I’ve never been able to run through a field- until this day. And I LOVED it. It was such a joyous and freeing feeling, especially after being mostly in my house or apartment for the past 10 months!!

If you’re in Chattanooga or in driving distance to it, I would highly recommend checking out Adventure Sports Innovation and taking a tour on their Spider Cars for an accessible way to get outside that is COVID-safe!!

After our tour, my family made our way to the Pinkberry downtown, which is the only Pinkberry in Tennessee (our local Nashville location closed in 2013, and I miss it dearly). My parents and I are obsessed with Pinkberry frozen yogurt, which is something you already know if you follow me on Instagram (@rosieroaming). Check out my “airports” highlight for proof, where I post pictures of airports when I travel through them and give my opinion, which usually relies on decor and whether or not they have a Pinkberry. Hopefully in 2021 I’ll be able to get back to an airport at some point- it’s been since August 2019 since I’ve been to one, a personal record for me.

If you have any questions, please reach out to me on Instagram! I have a Facebook page too, but honestly I’m not as active on there. You can also leave a comment on this post!!

Heading to Hamilton County to visit Chattanooga, Tennessee can be a long and windy road, but the uphill battle is certainly worth it. This southeastern city in Tennessee runs along the Appalachian Mountains with unbelievable natural wonder to take in, especially when the leaves change color in the fall.

There are numerous outdoor excursions to be enjoyed in Chattanooga these days, making this the perfect time to come visit. One of the best and most original experiences to try is a vehicle called the Swincar at Adventure Sports Innovation. This French made electric car allows the driver to use hand controls and climb over rough terrain with a patient, personal guide leading the winding way.

Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center

Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center

Giving Tuesday 2020 is December 1st. People around the globe come together in unity and showing kindness and generosity in all its forms by giving their voice, time, money, goods, and advocacy to support communities and causes.

One Chosen Charity?  Nope, there’s just too many worthy organizations in Chattanooga to pick only one!  Adventure Sports Innovation (ASI) is still a small business with a small budget, but we use our creativity to find ways to give back to the community at every chance we get. We’ve built strong relationships with Chattanooga’s STEM School, other local schools and colleges, and organizations such as Blood Assurance and McKamey Animal Shelter.  We frequently donate adventures or gift certificates to local non-profits for their silent auctions and fund-raising events (too many to list here!).

Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center (RRANC) is one of our favorite community partners and local non-profits.

Having hiked much of their extensive trail system as members, we thought this would be an ideal venue for our guests to test drive the unique Swincar electric off-road vehicle.   After the RRANC team got to try it out, they agreed that the Swincar’s silent operation, light footprint and zero emissions made it a natural fit.

For every Swincar tour, a portion of  the proceeds are donated to  RRANC, which goes toward helping them maintain and conserve one of the most beautiful places Chattanooga has to offer. Arrive early for or stick around after your next Swincar tour to see red wolves, birds of prey, bobcat and more at the native animal exhibit. Or check out their selection of native plants in the nursery.

In fact, if you or your family were impacted by the Easter Sunday tornado, you can pick up free native trees from Reflection Riding to replace trees that you might have lost. This is part of larger effort with the city of Chattanooga to improve water quality, lower energy costs for Chattanooga residents, and maintain the long lifespan of our city’s storm water drainage system. There are only 1000 trees available, so pay our friends a visit while supplies last, and enjoy the last of the fall colors while you’re at it!

So, we’re hoping you will be as generous as possible this Giving Tuesday 2020, and we’d be delighted if our friends and customers remember RRANC when selecting the organization(s) they want to contribute to!

Celebrate #Swintober!

Celebrate #Swintober!

adventure-sports-innovation-celebrate-Swintober

Thanks to all who are celebrating Swintober with the Swincars in October!

This is our busiest month for Swincar tours, they are the perfect vehicle (electric thus silent!) to take in the beauty of the fall foliage in the region.  We’ve been going every weekend, including our new Airbnb tours with picnic lunches included. Check out some of our Swincar USA videos below, and for more info about our tours (including our new Tandem e-Spider) click here.

What is the Swincar?

The Swincar e-Spider is an electrically powered off-road vehicle that provides a very unique driving experience, with a comfortable and stable ride that makes off-road driving accessible to a wide range of people that may not have previously considered this activity.  This vehicle offers a fantastic way to enjoy off the beauty of your property while giving a thrilling driving experience.    Due to its light footprint, zero emissions and totally silent operation, the Swincar doesn’t impact the serenity of nature, and doesn’t disturb horses nor wildlife.   Its low maintenance requirements will be a hit with your operations team too!    Just charge up and go – no gas, oil or other typical engine maintenance tasks.

Swincar West Coast Tour – Aug 2020

Swincar West Coast Tour – Aug 2020

Swincar USA west-coast Tour

Swincar USA west-coast tour

The Swincars’ West Coast debut was a big success, generating a lot of interest and enthusiasm for our innovative, eco-friendly off-road electric vehicle.   We put the vehicles through some tough and varied terrain, and they performed extremely well.  California fans of the Swincar will be excited to know that we are working to close on potential partnerships for dealers and touring fleets – we can’t wait to get test driving locations set up out west!

Over 21 days, ASI owner Patrick and Senior Adventure Guide Chris put 5,600 miles on our truck and trailer across 15 states, and in California alone we stopped in 8 cities to show off what our Swincars can do. We got to drive the Swincars in a huge variety of terrain, including iconic locations like the Bonneville Salt Flats, steep mountain trails near the continental divide, beautiful OHV parks like Hollister Hills, Prairie City and Wildomar, on private motocross tracks, ranches and vineyards, and even backyards and residential neighborhoods!     Our team thoroughly enjoyed the trip and made some great new friends despite historic heat waves, a global pandemic, multiple wildfires, a flat tire in the desert, and two hurricanes in our path.

Thanks to those who welcomed us during this Swincar USA west-coast tour: many went way out of their way to meet with us for test drives! The enthusiasm on the west of the U.S. for electric vehicles and low-impact ecotourism is unmatched anywhere in the U.S., and we were truly impressed with the overwhelming number of designated Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Areas, Bureau of Land Management properties, vineyards, ranches, beaches and generally-perfect places for Swincar driving.

Click here to see more Swincar videos!    If you’re interested in owning a Swincar, give us a call or email.  We’ve created a US owners program, and have a few vehicles in inventory now!
