9 Awesome Reasons for Wheelchair Users to Visit Accessible Chattanooga

9 Awesome Reasons for Wheelchair Users to Visit Accessible Chattanooga

Click here for full article from Sylvia Longmire.

Several months ago, I received an invitation from the Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) to visit the Scenic City, as it’s also known, and share with you its accessible sights and experiences. I’ve been to other parts of Tennessee and really enjoyed it, and based on everything I was told, I knew visiting Chattanooga would also be a special experience. However, nothing could have prepared me for some of the special things my hosts had in store for me! Read (and watch) below for nine awesome reasons for wheelchair users to visit accessible Chattanooga, Tennessee.

[…]Adaptive outdoor off-road adventure! When I was looking through my Chattanooga itinerary, I noticed something about an adapted vehicle of some sort called a SWINCAR. I thought my hosts were just taking me to see it in a showroom, or maybe a demo. Little did I know that I was going off-roading in this fully hand-controlled adapted buggy in the wooded hills of Chattanooga!

Adventure Sports Innovation (ASI) is the company that does this, and they truly offer an adventure for everyone. ASI curates the latest inventions and innovations in adventure sports and outdoor activities, providing individuals and groups with fun things to do. ASI is the first company in the USA to have one of these adapted e-Spider vehicles for wheelchair users, and boy, was I grateful for that! For a full hour, my tour guide, hosts, and I crawled over small logs, rocks, dips, twists, and turns through some of Chattanooga’s most beautiful scenery at the Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center.

Like any adaptive sports experience, the SWINCAR off-road experience isn’t for everyone. You will need significant upper body control and stability, as well as enough use of your arms and hands to steer the vehicle, squeeze the hand brakes (like those of a bicycle), and press the thumb throttle continuously. It can be a rough ride in several spots, as you are on horse and bike trails with several obstacles. If you have any injuries or chronic pain that could be exacerbated by getting jostled around, this might not be for you.

However, if it sounds like you can do this, here’s the adventure that awaits!

Try before you buy: From banjos to kayaks to chickens, here are five things you didn’t know you could rent in Chattanooga

Swincar

If you’ve ever planned a wedding, gone to prom or wowed the guests at a children’s birthday party, you’re probably aware of the abundance of items you can rent to make an event a success — everything from tables and chairs to tuxes and limos to bouncy houses and petting zoos.

But that’s not all you can rent in Chattanooga. With the coronavirus still whittling large gatherings off our social calendars, we went in search of some short-term rentals that can entertain us during isolation. These adopt-a-hobbies are ideal for no-guilt trial runs to see if your new pursuits have long-term potential.

Here are five ideas for rentable activities that can keep you occupied at home during your downtime or that you can enjoy while remaining socially distanced. Suppliers featured here are examples of what you might find. Policies will vary depending on where you shop.

4. Swincars

Here’s a contraption you’ve likely not seen before: the Swincar e-Spider, an electric, four-wheel-drive quadricycle resembling something between a dune buggy and a Model T. Easily able to navigate all kinds of terrain, the Swincar matches its extreme off-road capabilities with a light environmental impact and silent operation.

In Chattanooga, the Swincar is available at Adventure Sports Innovation on River Street, a company that specializes in high-tech outdoor experiences. When you book an outing, ASI will deliver your Swincar to Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center for a 60- or 90-minute tour within the 317-acre property.

Mark McKnight, president and CEO at Reflection Riding, says ASI’s CEOs and co-founders Carolina Eiris Molloy and Patrick J. Molloy reached out to him in 2018 with the “idea of letting people try out these crazy toys you might see on YouTube but never run into in day-to-day life.”

The buggies are ideal for exploring the 15 miles of trails at Reflection Riding, says McKnight.

“They allow you to see a lot more of the terrain and easily move across the terrain, especially as a way for people with disabilities to get out onto the trails,” he says. “They’re really low-impact — not like a four-wheeler where you’re tearing up the trails. They’re very low-impact and very quiet.”

Rental fees range from $109 to $250, which includes a $10 donation to Reflection Riding.

Other rentals available through ASI are electric bikes and scooters, hoverboards, hovershoes, Segways, electric unicycles and water bikes.

Exploring Trails as a Wheelchair User: My Experience Driving a Spider Car, Rosie Roaming, January 24 2021

Exploring Trails as a Wheelchair User: My Experience Driving a Spider Car, Rosie Roaming, January 24 2021

Exploring Trails as a Wheelchair User: My Experience Driving a Spider Car

Note: Social distancing was practiced the whole time, and masks were worn when in close-contact with people outside our household (which was only 15-20 minutes of our entire excursion). We didn’t wear masks out on the trail, but we weren’t in close contact with anyone out there. Also, all these thoughts are my own, I’m not partnered with Adventure Sports Innovation, just a happy customer!

A few weeks ago, my parents and I went to Chattanooga, TN and went off-roading and on trails using a spider car!

What is a spider car, you may be wondering? That’s the same question I had when we got there. (My parents didn’t tell me where we were going or what we were doing, I was just told to get in the car!)

A spider car, technically called a Swincar E-Spider Off-Road Vehicle, is a 4 wheel electric off-road vehicle! What makes the spider car unique is that the wheels move independently from each other and move up and down to keep themselves on the ground even when going up or down inclines or over obstacles. Here’s a picture and a link to a video to explain better than I can! (neither of these are my own content).

Adaptive needs Swincar driver

Most importantly (for me): they are all hand-controlled!! If you have full use of your hands, I think you’d be able to drive one! My fingers did tire occasionally, but I just switched to using my pointer finger to control the trigger for a little while and it was no problem. If you don’t have full use of your hands, they do have at least one 2-person car at Adventure Sports Innovation, so you should be able to be a passenger and still enjoy the trails!

We started off going on flat paths to learn how to control the cars and go over small obstacles and inclines, then went to more advanced terrain. To be honest, historically I am not a fan of going off-road. It makes me incredibly nervous. When we got there and I discovered the surprise was going off-road and then realized I would be driving (rather than being a passenger where I could close my eyes and wait to be done with the anxiety-inducing steep hill), I looked at my mom like she was crazy. BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY VERY FUN AND NOT NERVE-WRACKING! Our guide Chris was spectacular and assured me we weren’t going to do anything crazy. Once I started driving, I felt very comfortable and had an excellent time! I think being in control actually calmed my nerves too.

I honestly enjoyed the whole experience, but my favorite part was going very quickly through the fields at top speeds (around 18 mph). As a wheelchair user, I’ve never been able to run through a field- until this day. And I LOVED it. It was such a joyous and freeing feeling, especially after being mostly in my house or apartment for the past 10 months!!

If you’re in Chattanooga or in driving distance to it, I would highly recommend checking out Adventure Sports Innovation and taking a tour on their Spider Cars for an accessible way to get outside that is COVID-safe!!

After our tour, my family made our way to the Pinkberry downtown, which is the only Pinkberry in Tennessee (our local Nashville location closed in 2013, and I miss it dearly). My parents and I are obsessed with Pinkberry frozen yogurt, which is something you already know if you follow me on Instagram (@rosieroaming). Check out my “airports” highlight for proof, where I post pictures of airports when I travel through them and give my opinion, which usually relies on decor and whether or not they have a Pinkberry. Hopefully in 2021 I’ll be able to get back to an airport at some point- it’s been since August 2019 since I’ve been to one, a personal record for me.

If you have any questions, please reach out to me on Instagram! I have a Facebook page too, but honestly I’m not as active on there. You can also leave a comment on this post!!

Heading to Hamilton County to visit Chattanooga, Tennessee can be a long and windy road, but the uphill battle is certainly worth it. This southeastern city in Tennessee runs along the Appalachian Mountains with unbelievable natural wonder to take in, especially when the leaves change color in the fall.

There are numerous outdoor excursions to be enjoyed in Chattanooga these days, making this the perfect time to come visit. One of the best and most original experiences to try is a vehicle called the Swincar at Adventure Sports Innovation. This French made electric car allows the driver to use hand controls and climb over rough terrain with a patient, personal guide leading the winding way.
